Clearplasma: The Latest Innovation That Could Save Millions of Lives

Globally, more than 5 million deaths are caused by massive hemorrhages. Besides having limited options to treat hemorrhages, one factor that contributes to the deaths is blood loss.

Naturally, bleeding in your body is controlled by proteins in your plasma called Coagulation Factors. Many of the proteins are produced by the liver and in the occurrence of a bruise or wound, they rush to the site and convert the liquid blood around it into a solid form known as a clot. The clot acts as a plug and prevents further blood loss.

By that logic, immense bleeding caused by hemorrhages can be controlled by improving the Coagulation Factors in a patient’s plasma. And that is exactly what PlasFree’s latest project aims to achieve.

The private company’s latest, EU-funded innovation is ClearPlasma, a filtration system that modifies human plasma to improve the treatment of massive bleeding by extracting plasminogen (a protein responsible for dissolving blood clots) and enhancing coagulation and favoring hemostasis. This process equips patients with greater bleeding control and can potentially save millions of lives.

ClearPlasma has successfully shown through models to have reduced bleeding by 55%. However, extracting plasminogen could have the ill effect of altering the said plasma’s composition. So, while PlasFree is hopeful, they must wait until it succeeds in clinical tests, and, finally, is approved by the FDA.
